SCHOOL: Key gun details

| March 18, 2018 1:00 AM

In reply to John Johnson’s letter of Friday, March 16, there is no blanket restriction against individuals carrying firearms on school property. There are exceptions to the rule, and the school board can authorize individuals to carry concealed on site without them being an active sworn Idaho law enforcement officer.

Specifically, Idaho Code section 18-3302D (4) (f) allows that “[n]otwithstanding the provisions of section 18-3302C, Idaho Code, a person or an employee of the school or school district who is authorized to carry a firearm [may do so] with the permission of the board of trustees of the school district or the governing board.”

With the Second Amendment not going away any time soon, and more than 300 million privately owned weapons in America, it would be intelligent to not only teach our children weapons recognition, handling and use, but also allow teachers and administrators to be armed on campus to deter immediate threats.
