BOARDS: What she said

Sholeh Patrick’s March 6 article regarding the standard of care required by members of nonprofit boards that serve our community was an outstanding and timely summary of what we should expect and require.

Our community is exceptionally generous in its donations of time and treasure to our many nonprofit organizations, and the use of those donations require each person serving on the boards of directors of those organizations to be prudent, diligent and thoughtful in their use of those donations and resources. I have been privileged to serve on many nonprofit boards in our community, and know of the care and dedication that many bring to their service on those boards.

Despite this, Ms. Patrick’s article is a timely reminder of the standards that all who serve on these boards need to require and hold themselves and their fellow board members to account for. As a community, we also need to require that the board members of our nonprofits provide us with confirmation that they attend those board meetings, that they come prepared to address the mission and the business of the organization and that they invest the time required to insure that the community resources that we have provided to those organizations are being adequately cared for and properly utilized.
