Local players named to prep

all-state baseball team

Four local high school players were named to the USA Today American Family Insurance All-USA Idaho baseball first team.

Honored were pitcher Jake Pfennigs and outfielder Chase Cripps of Post Falls High, and infielders Kodie Kolden and Kyle Manzardo of Lake City High.

Pitch, Hit & Run team finals

Two area youth will join other competitors from around the greater Pacific Northwest for the chance to represent the Seattle Mariners at the national finals in Washington, D.C., for the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run skills competition. The youngsters will compete in the team championship competition at Safeco Field on Sunday, following the Seattle Mariners vs. Kansas City Royals game.

The local competitors ore Paytland Schnell of Hayden, in the 7/8 Year Old Softball Division; and KaeLee Kolden of Post Falls, in the 9/10 Year Old Softball Division.

The competitors in both baseball and softball range in age from 7-14. They qualified for Sunday’s team championship by advancing through local and sectional competitions held in May and June around Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and British Columbia. Only the top three finishers in each age group qualified for the Mariners team championship competition.

The top finishers from Sunday’s competition have the opportunity to advance to the Pitch, Hit & Run National Finals, which will take place during MLB’s 2018 All-Star Week festivities at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The scores from the Safeco Field competition will be compared with the scores of all competitors across the country in each age group, with the top three from each division moving on to the national championship on July 16 before the All-Star Home Run Derby.

NIC coach Grove ties

for fourth at Oregon Open

SISTERS, Ore. — North Idaho College men’s and women’s golf coach Russell Grove finished tied for fourth at the Oregon Open Invitational, which concluded Thursday at Aspen Lakes Golf Club.

Grove, the defending champion, shot a 1-under 215 (68-72-75) in the 54-hole event.

Colin Inglis of Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore., won his first Pacific Northwest PGA section major by two strokes over Community Colleges of Spokane coach Corey Prugh. Inglis shot a 7-under 209 (69-69-71). Prugh, who led by two shots after Wednesday’s second round, finished at 5-under 211 (70-66-75).

Billy Bomar of Prairie Falls tied for 13th at 3-over 219 (72-74-73).
