Courtesy photo The Lake City Thunder placed second in the Crush/In Motion fastpitch softball tournament in Post Falls over Father’s Day weekend. In pool play, the Thunder defeated the Post Falls Blast 12-0 on the strength of Makiya McPhedran’s 9-strikeout no hitter. McPhedran also went 2 for 3 and Natalya Lucero went 2 for 2 in the win. Game 2 was a 12-5 loss to the Spokane Stealth. Lucero went 2 for 2 with a triple and Tapanga Rojas hit a home run. The Thunder defeated the Colville Tribe 14-3 with Lucero earning the win. Lucero and McPhedran both went 2 for 3 with a triple. In championship play, Rojas hit a 3-run home run to back pitcher Brooklyn Wullenwaber as the Thunder defeated the Washington Rampage 12-4. Wullenwaber went 2 for 3. The Thunder defeated the North Idaho Bombers in the semifinal. McPhedran had 11 strikeouts, and Layla Gugino went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI. Rojas knocked in Gugino to score the winning run. The championship game went to extra innings where the Spokane Stealth defeated the Thunder 13-11. Kylin Chavez had 4 hits, McPhedran had 3 hits, and Wullenwaber had 2 hits to lead the Thunder. Cassie Zaring and Gugino had 2 RBI each. Junior Amateur qualifier: Chandler McDowell of Springbrook, Alberta, shot a 1-under par 71 to earn medalist honors in leading the field of 40 players who competed June 19 in U.S. Junior Amateur Championship sectional qualifying at The Club at Rock Creek in Coeur d’Alene.

McDowell, who played in the final group of the day, was the only player from this sectional qualifier to advance to compete in the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which will be held July 16-21 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.

McDowell is a freshman at Lynn University, a Division II school in Boca Raton, Fla.

The two alternates from this qualifier are Eloy Vigil Escalera of Puebla, Mex. (first), and Hayden Gamache of Spokane (second).

Cameron Flores of Post Falls shot 78 and was the top local finisher.
