Crash during chase injures two

POST FALLS — When Daniel Powell woke up to a thunderous crash outside his front door on Friday, police had their guns drawn on Levi Pogue as he emerged from the window of a vehicle on its side.

"They quickly cuffed him on the ground and told him not to move because they didn't know if he had a gun or not," Powell said.

Pogue, 26, of Spokane, was arrested for aggravated DUI and resisting arrest after the 1999 Chevy Tahoe he was driving crashed into a 2018 Cadillac CT6 at the intersection of Maplewood Avenue and Ross Point Road in Post Falls at 1:12 p.m.

The driver of the Cadillac, Donnie W. Apple, 76, Post Falls, and his passenger, Carolyn F. Apple, 78, Post Falls, were transported to Kootenai Health, where they were in serious condition late Friday afternoon. Carolyn Apple had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Kimberly Powell, Daniel's mom, said she's counting her blessings because just a few minutes later and she would have been unloading groceries in her driveway.

"I would have been showered with shrapnel while getting groceries out of my car," she said.

Post Falls' Taylor Anderson, who responded to the scene near his home, said the Tahoe is owned by his friend, Josh Fuller, of Coeur d'Alene.

"It was stolen from a Holiday gas station in Coeur d'Alene (a little earlier in the day)," Anderson said.

Anderson's mother, Lisa Anderson, said she and others received a text from Fuller and his girlfriend to keep an eye out for his vehicle. She said Fuller's boss spotted the vehicle near Shopko.

Post Falls Police located the stolen vehicle on Seltice Way near Ross Point Road, according to Idaho State Police. A traffic stop was made, but Pogue allegedly then led police on a short chase.

"I could then hear sirens because they were near my house (in Post Falls)," Lisa Anderson said.

The crash occurred soon thereafter.

"When my neighbor sent me a text that there was a big wreck in my front yard, I thought it was a joke at first," said Kimberly Powell, adding that the area where the crash occurred had recently been landscaped. "I just moved here from California a year ago trying to get away from all of this stuff."

She said traffic often speeds along Ross Point and another crash into a fence at the same intersection occurred last winter.

"The Centennial Trail goes along here so there are a lot of bicyclists and pedestrians," she said. "I'm just glad nobody else got caught in the mayhem."

Jaetuan Hall, who also lives at the home, said Pogue continued to be uncooperative with police after he was arrested.

"I was about to approach to help, but I could see that the situation was escalating," he said.

It appears the Cadillac was northbound on Ross Point when it was struck on the passenger side by the Tahoe, which was westbound on Maplewood. There is a stop sign on Maplewood.

"The Tahoe crunched that brand new Cadillac hard," said Bob Flowers, who lives near the crash.

Traffic was diverted to Ridgewood Drive during the investigation.
