Coeur d'Alene teams win openers at state playoffs

EAGLE — Braeden Newby struck out 13 in 5 1/3 innings as Coeur d’Alene edged West Valley of Eagle/Star/Middleton 6-5 in the first game of the best-of-3 state Majors playoffs Friday at Duck Alley.

Coeur d’Alene can wrap up the state title and a trip to the Northwest Regional in San Bernardino, Calif., with a victory today in Game 2 at 10 a.m. PDT. A West Valley win would force a deciding game Sunday at 10 a.m.

Austin DeBoer hit a solo homer in the second inning for Coeur d’Alene, and Avrey Cherry went 3 for 3.

Wheaton Ennis hit a three-run homer for West Valley.

Travis Usdrowski went 3 for 3 and pitched 3 2/3 innings as Coeur d’Alene beat Southwest Ada of southwest Boise and southeast Meridian 12-2 in four innings in the opener of their 11U best-of-3 state playoff series at Duck Alley.

Coeur d’Alene can wrap up the state title with a victory today in Game 2 at 10 a.m. PDT. A Southwest Ada win would force a deciding game Sunday at 10 a.m.

Cason Miller went 3 for 3 for Coeur d’Alene, and came on to record the game’s final out.
