Northern Lakes qualifies for Washington state 'A' tourney
SPOKANE VALLEY — In its fourth year as a program, Northern Lakes American Legion has produced its first state qualifier.
Playing in a Washington class A league, Northern Lakes beat Whitman County 14-0 on Thursday in the district tournament at University High to qualify for the Washington state tourney beginning July 28 in the Seattle area.
This Northern Lakes team consists mostly of players entering ninth and 10th grades. Northern Lakes’ older team is an Idaho class A team that plays in the North Idaho League.
Alex Drake pitched a five-inning no-hitter for Northern Lakes (19-15), which won its 10th straight game. He walked one — the only baserunner he allowed.
Payden Wysong, Sean Tierney and Collin Bell each drove in two runs for the Mountaineers, who drew 11 walks.
Northern Lakes, coached by Timberlake High head coach Cameron Knigge, plays top-seeded Mt. Spokane today at 12:45 p.m. at U-Hi. The winner plays in the district title game Saturday; the loser plays for third and fourth on Saturday. The top six teams from this district tourney advance to state.
