WSU men to open

Pac-12 season on road

SAN FRANCISCO — Washington State men’s basketball team will open the 2018-19 Pac-12 season with three-straight road games, the Pac-12 announced, along with the weekly matchups and site designations for the league’s 2018-19 men’s basketball season.

Since the additions of Colorado and Utah to form the Pac-12 in 2012, not all conference schools play each other twice in a season.

This season the Cougars will play UCLA and USC just once, at Pullman, and will play Arizona and Arizona State just once, at Arizona.

There is a two-year rotation in which each team will play four teams once, either at home or on the road. This season marks the second of a two-year rotation after playing Colorado, Utah, California and Stanford just once in both 2011-12 and 2012-13, Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA and USC just once each in both 2013-14 and 2014-15, and Oregon, Oregon State, California and Stanford just once each in both 2015-16 and 2016-17.

The Cougars open Pac-12 play with three-straight road games beginning at Washington the week of Jan. 2-6. The following week, WSU will head to Colorado and Utah to take on the Buffaloes and Utes the week of Jan. 9-13. Washington State opens the home Pac-12 season the week of Jan. 16-20 hosting California and Stanford.

During the week of Jan. 23-27, WSU heads to Oregon to take on the Beavers and the Ducks, before closing out January and bringing in February with its only meetings with USC and UCLA, Jan. 30-Feb. 3, at Pullman.

Washington State then hosts three straight home games, beginning with Washington the week of Feb. 13-17 and followed by Utah and Colorado for the second time, Feb. 20-24. The final road trip of the season takes the Cougars to the Bay Area to take on Stanford and California, Feb. 27-March 3. Once again, the Cougars close the regular season at home hosting Oregon and Oregon State, March 6-9.

The Pac-12 Tournament will take place at T-Mobile Arena at Las Vegas, March 13-16. The nonconference season is expected to be released later this week.

Thompson named to

Bednarik Award Watch List

PHILADELPHIA — Washington State junior safety Jalen Thompson was named to the 2018 Bednarik Award Watch List, presented annually to the College Defensive Player of the Year, the Maxwell Football Club announced. Thompson is one of nine Pac-12 Conference players named to the watch list.

Thompson was an All-Pac-12 second-team selection last season after leading the Cougars with 73 tackles and tied for fourth in the Pac-12 with four interceptions. The junior from Downey, Calif. started all 13 games, tied for the conference lead with three fumble recoveries and was also named to the Associated Press All-Pac-12 First Team.
