Sting Timbers girls clinch berth in title game
WESTFIELD, Ind. — With one game still remaining in group play, the Sting Timbers girls 00/01 soccer team is already assured a berth in the 18U championship game of the US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup.
Chloe Teets’ penalty kick gave the Sting Timbers a 2-1 victory over the Vereinigung Erzgebirge United of Pennsylvania on Friday morning at Grand Park Sports Complex.
The Sting Timbers, who beat CUFC Gold of North Carolina 3-0 on Thursday, leads the four-team 18U group with six points. Green White SC of Illinois, which beat CUFC Gold 4-0 on Friday, is in second place with four points. Green White SC and Vereinigung Erzgebirge United played to a 2-all tie on Thursday. VE United is in third place with one point, and CUFC Gold is in fourth with zero points.
The Sting Timbers wrap up group play vs. the Green White SC today at 4:45 a.m. PDT.
On Friday, the Sting Timbers scored first on a goal by Megan Drake in the 10th minute. Late in the first half, the ball slipped through the Sting defenders and VE United’s Olivia Miller outran them to place the ball past the goalkeeper as she came off her line.
In the second half, Madyson Smith of the Sting Timbers was taken down in the 18-yard box as she was taking a shot on goal. Teets stepped up and converted the penalty kick for the go-ahead goal.
