WESTFIELD, Ind. — Bridget Rieken, Megan Drake and Madyson Smith each scored a goal as the Sting Timbers FC 00/01 girls soccer team beat CUFC Gold of North Carolina 3-0 on the first day of group play at the US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup at the Grand Park Sports Complex on Thursday.

Rieken opened the scoring in the 36th minute with a volley off a corner kick delivered by Chloe Teets.

After withstanding some early second half pressure from the South Region champions, a second Sting Timbers goal was scored by the West Regional goal scoring leader Megan Drake after she took the ball off the defender, dribbled past the keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net.

The lead was extended with a goal by Smith on a second set-piece assist for Teets.

“Lily Foster had little action in goal, thanks to organized defending from the players in front of her,” Sting coach Julio Morales said.

The Sting Timbers are scheduled to play Vereinigung Erzgebirge United of Pennsylvania today at 7 a.m. PDT in their second group game, then face Green White SC of Illinois on Saturday at 4:45 a.m. PDT to conclude group play.

VE United and Green White SC played to a 2-2 tie on Thursday.

The top two teams following the four-team group play on Saturday advance to Sunday’s championship game. The other two teams play for third place.
