Vikings start cold, but beat Lewiston

| January 20, 2018 12:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The bad news is that Coeur d’Alene didn’t score a basket in the first 5:30 of Friday’s 5A Inland Empire League game.

The good news is that, even with the early struggles, it didn’t matter late.

Sam Matheson scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Vikings past the Lewiston Bengals 51-46 at Elmer Jordan Court, helping the Vikings improve to 2-1 in league.

“Nobody was hitting anything in that first quarter,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna, whose team led 5-4 after the first. “It wasn’t the prettiest game in the world, but both teams locked down on defense.”

Coeur d’Alene closed the game 7 for 9 in the final 1:30 at the free-throw line to finish off the win.

“We just did what we had to do to finish it off,” Hanna said. “It was a really important one, especially when we play them down there.”

Kale Edwards scored 14 points for Coeur d’Alene (6-7, 2-1 5A IEL), which visits Big Sky High of Missoula today at 2 PST.

Donaven Santana scored 15 points for Lewiston (7-8, 0-3).
