COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene Public Schools on Wednesday opened general contractor bids to expand and update Lake City High School.

Ginno Construction Co.’s bid of $5,815,000 was the lowest of four bids submitted. Administrators will evaluate the bid and submit it to the Board of Trustees for approval Friday morning.

“This bid result is great news for our school district,” said Superintendent Stan Olson. “Ginno Construction’s record of quality work will result in a bigger, more functional Lake City High School for students today and many years to come.”

Ginno Construction, based in Coeur d’Alene, has previously worked with the school district on remodels at Lakes Magnet Middle School (2006), Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities (2013), and Bryan Elementary School (2014).

The Lake City High School expansion will add 10 new classrooms in a two-story addition on the south end of the school. That addition will allow the school district to remove all portable classrooms at Lake City.

In addition, an auxiliary gym will be built to alleviate crowded physical education programs and provide additional space for team sports. An addition will be built onto the existing wrestling room as well, and the weight room will be relocated into a new space.

The contractor also will add a multi-purpose classroom/meeting room, and make improvements to the student drop-off area at the front of the school.

Construction will start this spring and conclude in the fall. The district allocated $6.6 million for the project from the $35.5 million bond measure approved by voters in March 2017.

The project architect is Architects West of Coeur d’Alene.

The district closed its bond sale in June 2017, locking in an interest rate of 2.47 percent — lower than the assumed rate of 3.07 percent before the election. The lower interest rate will result in interest cost savings of about $2.5 million.

The district benefited from its excellent bond rating while locking in historically low interest rates on the bonds. Moody’s Investors Service confirmed the district’s bond rating at “Aa2,” which indicates excellent credit quality.

Here are the scheduled bid openings for other projects in the Coeur d’Alene School District’s bond program:

Jan. 31 — Fernan STEM Academy parking lot reconfiguration

Feb. 7 — Coeur d’Alene High School expansion and remodel (Design West)

Feb. 14 — Dalton Elementary School expansion and remodel (Longwell + Trapp Architects)

Feb. 28 — Lakes Magnet Middle School expansion and remodel (Longwell + Trapp Architects)

Plans for Lake City High School and the other bond projects are on the school district’s website at https://www.cdaschools.org/levybond.
