Hoop shoot, gymnastics, bowling and more
ELKS HOOP SHOOT
A record was broken at the annual Coeur d’Alene Elks Hoop Shoot held Jan. 7 at the Post Falls High School Arena as Alexis Heath won her fourth Waide Hamner Top Gun Award, breaking the record she shared with Zach Mackimmie, a two-time Hoop Shoot national finalist.
Heath, in her sixth and final year of eligibility, earned her fifth trip to the district championships in Kellogg to tie MacKimmie for that mark. And more records could be on the horizon for Heath as she attempts to tie MacKimmie for five trips to the State Championships and break a record she shares with MacKimmie and Deacon Kiesbuy as the only representatives from Coeur d’Alene to go to the Northwest Regional Championships twice.
Jace Taylor of Betty Kiefer Elementary won the boys’ Hamner Award on his way to his second consecutive 8-9 age group victory in as many tries.
Heath put the pressure on the rest of the girls’ 12-13 age bracket from the opening shot of the first round when she filled the hoop with 9 of her 10 shots. Matching Heath shot for shot was the final shooter in the round, Canfield’s Madison Mitchell. Morgan Dickinson and Alyssa Krause stayed within striking distance each making 8 of their 10 shots. Karina Sande made 7 of 10 to round out the tight bunch at the top of the leaderboard.
When the second round began, Heath missed her first two shots before reeling off 13 straight and final total of 22 points. Each competitor fell by the wayside until Mitchell stepped to the line to put up the final challenge to Heath. After a fast start, Mitchell hit a cold spell that included three misses in four shots.
Mitchell did make 10 of her final 15 shots for second place. Sande earned the bronze medal with a final score of 17 of 25.
Just like in the girls’ oldest age group, the youngest boys’ category was a dog fight from the first shot. Taylor set the pace with 8 of 10 shots but that was only good enough for a four-way first place tie that included Cody Trost, Garrett Hall and Braxxton Barker. One shot behind was Brett Johnson, Rylan Braga, Tyler Zachary and Britton Johnston.
As good as Taylor was in the first round, he was even better in the second hitting 14 of 15 shots to distance himself from the field with a final tally of 22 of 25. Johnson, Ben McElvany and Johnston all tied for second with 20 of 25. In the tiebreaker, Johnston hit all five shots for second place and McElvany made four to take third.
In the end, nine of the competitors made at least 17 shots in the age group.
“I can’t remember having that many good shooters in this age group,” said longtime score keeper Chuck Wideen. “They were all amazing.”
The girls’ 10-11 age group saw the return of Kamryn Pickford, a National Hoop Shoot Finalist from a year ago, as she tried to defend her title. But a slow start put Pickford behind the eight-ball and she was tied for seventh after the first round.
Taking the lead in that first round was Seltice‘s Kaelee Kolden and Garwood’s Payton Sterling each making six of 10 shots.
Pickford warmed up in the second round making 14 of 15 to take the lead. Three shooters later it was Sterling’s turn at the line. With the margin for error very slim, Sterling sank her last six shots to beat her AAU teammate by a point. Kyler Kirking finished third with a final score of 15.
In the girls’ 8-9 division, the very first shooter, Dalton’s Kaylee Paulson, scored the only perfect round of the competition scoring 10 of 10 and never looked back. Paulson finished with 19 points to outdistance Maila Miller of Spirit Lake and her 17 points. Addyson Chase finished third with 15 points.
Rounding out the boys’ side, Atlas’ Paxton Winey won the 10-11 age group with 17 of 25. Winton’s Stockton Montague was second at 15 and last year’s age group winner, Steven Anderson, took third with 13 of 25.
Kolton Mitchell, of Woodland Middle School, won the boys’ 12-13 age group with a final score of 20 out of 25, topping Canfield’s Jesse Brown and his final score of 17. Timberlake Junior High’s Raja Olivieri took third with 14 points.
