Charles “Chuck” Anthony Stein, 89

Beloved long-time Kellogg grocer, Charles “Chuck” Anthony Stein, 89, of Osburn, Idaho, passed away Dec. 31, 2017, at the Hospice House of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was born May 17, 1928, in Kellogg, Idaho. Chuck was the son of Edward P. and Valerine (Zoellner) Stein.

Chuck lived in the Silver Valley all of his life. He attended and graduated from the Kellogg High School in 1946. He also attended Gonzaga University. Chuck served in the Idaho Army National Guard in the 148th Field Artillery Battalion at Fort Carson, Colo., during the Korean Conflict.

Chuck married Viola (Kalsto) Bordon on May 20, 1995, in Wallace, Idaho. Vi passed away on July 17, 2012.

Chuck served as co-owner and operator of Stein’s Markets for 50 years. The Stein family owned five stores in Idaho and Montana. Chuck’s career was in the Kellogg market, which was operated by the Stein family for 86 years. He retired in 1990.

Chuck was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Wallace, the Knights of Columbus, the Kellogg Elks, American Legion Gus Zoellner Post 36. He had received a note from the Post in 2017, noting he was the longest standing member at 66 years. Chuck was also a member and past board member of the Bunker Hill Staff House Museum.

Chuck loved and enjoyed his family, collecting rocks and gems, and fishing and spending time at the cabin in Copper Camp on the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River.

Chuck is survived by Vi’s two children, Mike Bordon of Lebanon, Penn. and Andrea Partridge of Kellogg, Idaho; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sibling, Alfred Stein of Silverton and Hubert and Becky Stein of Post Falls, Idaho; brothers-in-law, Bill Hunter of Ocean Pines, Md., and Glenn Shepard of Spokane, Wash.; 19 beloved nieces, nephews and their spouses. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vi; stepson, Brian and siblings, Gus, Gertrude, June and Dena.

Rosary services will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Wallace. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at the Church with Father Jerome Montez serving as Celebrant. A reception and luncheon will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall following services. Inurnment will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg.
