ARTICLES: Worth two smiles

| January 3, 2018 12:00 AM

First of all, I want any reader to know what I’m writing about is with a smile because I find these two subjects in The Press rather funny.

The Dec. 28 “A Brand New Day” by Steve Cameron about what makes a “white Christmas” was interesting but being a bit of a non-conformist, I chuckled when I read the statement, “Basically one inch of snow on the ground makes it ‘technically’ a white Christmas,” Mann said. I guess 7/8 of an inch isn’t, “technically.” So, it has to be a certain depth of white before it’s white enough. It reminded me of the global warming debate. If it’s hot or cold, it’s GW. No big deal, it made me smile.

The other article that made me smile was Dec. 26 about college students who developed software to “combat fake news.” It’s designed as an extension for Google’s Chrome browser. You know; Google, that company that is totally unbiased and would never mislead anyone by directing you to sites of their political persuasion. One quote from the creators of the software I found revealing, “So let’s say there is an article that is very pro-Trump on a topic,” An said. “We could then try to give you something more left of center. We can go out and find for you that alternative article.”

Really? They just want to help us and without any bias at all. God bless their little hearts. Hmmm. It did make me smile.
