Donald Eugene Hargrave, 90

Donald Eugene Hargrave, longtime Post Falls, Idaho, resident, passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 25, 2018, at the Booker Rest Home in Dayton, Wash. He was 90.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2018, in the chapel of Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home, Dayton. Private burial will take place in the St. John (Washington) Cemetery.

Donald was the youngest of nine children and was born June 8, 1927, in the family home in Lancaster, Wash., to Robert and Maude Martz Hargrave. He grew up around Lancaster and the rolling hills of the Palouse country. Donald attended school in St. John.

He married Neva Cook on March 23, 1945. They lived in Lancaster and started their family there. Donald worked for the railroad for a little while and also did some labor work for area farmers. They moved briefly to Colfax before he landed a job in Spokane working at a sawmill. He spent many years at Pike Lumber near the site of what is now Spokane Community College.

In 1951, Donald and Neva moved their family to Post Falls, Idaho and bought a small piece of property that became his little “farm.” He loved to raise cows and chickens on his patch. He always had a large garden as well. They raised six children in North Idaho. A vacation for Donald meant putting up lots and lots of hay.

Donald worked at Post Falls Lumber for many years as a millworker. He was also instrumental in getting pressurized irrigation to parts of the Rathdrum Prairie. He was active in the Eagles Club and the senior citizens centers in both Rathdrum and Post Falls. Following retirement they liked to travel in an RV and enjoyed several trips to Arizona this way.

His wife of 62 years, Neva, passed away Aug. 8, 2007. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Tom (Glennda), Deloris Rosin, Mike (Janice), Sue (Bob) Meyers, Maryann (Bud) Chasko and Bill (Patsy). Don will also be fondly remembered by his 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandkids and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and all eight of his siblings. Don had recently moved to Dayton to be closer to family and he so enjoyed trips in the car through the rolling fields once again.

The family suggests memorial gifts be made to Walla Walla Hospice. Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home of Dayton is caring for the family.
