GUNS: NRA mission vs. myth

| February 25, 2018 12:00 AM

Bill Rutherford, I feel your grief and frustration in finding an answer to the shooting in Florida. I, like you, have similar backgrounds when it comes to guns. I grew up shooting and hunting. Guns were always there. However, I would never have thought of using one on another person unless it was for self-protection. But that was another time. One thing I do know that there was no fault of the gun. The gun is an inanimate object and its mechanism is designed to operate in a specific manner when the human being holding it activates it. Nothing more, nothing less.

As for the politicians and the media making the NRA the bad guys, each person needs to do their own research on the organization and make up their own mind, and not be swayed by the opinionated and uninformed media. The NRA is not a faceless entity, but millions of law-abiding Americans who like to shoot, hunt and use guns for self-defense. The NRA was started by a group of white clergymen after the Civil War that supplied guns and training to former slaves who were being molested and killed by the KKK. Today the NRA trains the military, FBI and millions of civilians on the correct and safe use of various types of firearms. They are also the utmost authority on all things involving firearms in the United States. They are NOT the Boogeyman.

We don’t have a gun problem, we have a people problem.
