SPIRIT LAKE — Sophomore Jacob James made three 3-pointers and scored 19 points, and the host Timberake Tigers used a big third quarter to run away from the Bonners Ferry Badgers and earn a berth to the state 3A tournament next week at Meridian High with a 75-56 victory Friday night.

Colton Counts and Jordan Hardy each added 11 points for Timberlake (10-13) in the second-place game of the 3A District 1 tournament.

“We worked hard,” Timberlake coach Michael Scott. “And we hustled, we ran the floor. Our transition defense was great.”

Timberlake, qualifying for state for the second straight season, opens vs. District 5 champion Snake River (20-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m. PST. The Tigers lost in the consolation title game last year; Snake River lost to Sugar-Salem in the state title game.

Chase Gardom scored 10 points as Timberlake had four players in double figures.

Juniors Seth Bateman and Dylan Hittle each scored 11 points for Bonners Ferry (10-13). Senior point guard Chris Sabin, the Badgers’ top scorer, was held to seven points.

“We played a zone, but everybody’s responsibility was to know where he was at all times,” Scott said. “We made sure we were out on him, and didn’t let him get open.”

MOSCOW — The visiting Hawks led by three points at halftime and by one after three quarters, but a dry spell in the fourth spelled an end to their season in Game 2 of the best-of-3 4A Region 1 boys basketball championship series at Bear Den.

Moscow (10-13) outscored Lakeland 21-10 over the final eight minutes to win the series 2-0 and advance to state next week at Borah High in Boise.

Junior Josiah Haaland had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Lakeland, which finished 13-9.

“We had a couple turnovers in some bad spots, and they took advantage,” Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said of the fatefull fourth. “It (the lead) slowly opened up as it went, and we did not answer very well.”

Sweet-shooting junior Gabe Quinnett hit 7 of 11 three-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points for Moscow. Senior point guard Cooper Stephens added 20 points for the Bears, who repeated as regional champs.

Senior Kaden Davis had 11 points and four assists for Lakeland, which led 27-24 at intermission.

“We came out and executed what we wanted to execute,” Ryan said. “We started in a 1-3-1 zone, and it put them off a little bit. Through three quarters our defense was pretty strong. In the fourth, we had some execution problems.”
