How to say thanks to your carrier
Mary Jane Hahn’s got the spirit.
All year ‘round.
The Post Falls resident and nearly 40-year Press subscriber penned the following letter to the editor, published Aug. 11, 2017. It’s even more appropriate now, on the first day of winter.
“In regard to Bill Brooks’ comment re: his paper carrier. He said occasionally he leaves a “small tip” for him. A small tip? Knowing what our paper carriers go through seven days a week — no vacation, no holidays — and only a small tip? Come on. I live on Social Security only, but I mail my tip of $20 every month. I’m not bragging, but who can’t afford $5 a week for your paper person? Believe me, they earn every dollar, and we all can afford to tip them. Think about it please.”
Mary Jane was on the money. Many of you already know that and tip your carrier to the best of your ability.
To those of you who haven’t considered even a holiday tip, think about it, please.
Yes, carriers are paid based on the number of newspapers they deliver and the distance of their routes. But as you might infer from Mary Jane’s observation, this is not a typical job. These dedicated independent contractors — they’re self-employed — get up at night about the time many of us are tumbling into our deepest, most satisfying slumber. They climb into their cars and drive to The Press printing facility in downtown Coeur d’Alene, load up with that day’s newspapers, then head out and complete their routes as expediently as possible, no matter what the weather throws at them. They do their very best to get you your newspaper in good condition — and in time for breakfast.
Some of these carriers are retirees, supplementing retirement income that doesn’t cover the basics. Some are fathers and mothers working extra to ensure their families don’t suffer. And some are just industrious men and women who would rather commit to those no-vacation, no-holiday schedules than subsist on welfare.
If your carrier has provided excellent service, a little thank you now will go a long way for them. Don’t know how to get a tip to your carrier? Contact the Circulation Department at 208-664-0220 and they’ll help you.
