Coeur d'Alene hangs on to beat Lakeland
COEUR d’ALENE — It wasn’t the way Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna wanted to close out a game, but it will go down as a win none the less.
Drew Hostetter hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining to give the Vikings a 51-47 lead. Coeur d’Alene was called for a technical foul with 1.8 seconds remaining, and Lakeland’s Jalen Skalskiy made two free throws to cut the deficit to 2 before a shot by Lakeland came up short at the buzzer as the Vikings held off the Hawks 51-49 in a nonleague game at Viking Court on Tuesday.
“In the first half, we held them to 13 points and did a good job defensively,” Hanna said. “(Josh) Neilson scored 11 of his 18 points in the third quarter, and we just kind of held on. We tried to control the ball at the end of the game, and they had a chance to win. It’s not necessarily the way you want to close a game, but it’s a win. Lakeland battled. When they get momentum going, they can score in a hurry. The really put the pressure on us.”
Hostetter scored 18 points for Coeur d’Alene (3-2), which travels to Big Sky of Missoula, Mont., on Thursday.
Neilson scored 18 points for Lakeland (3-4), which hosts Lewiston on Jan. 3.

POST FALLS — Colby Gennett had 23 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for the Trojans, but the visiting Bantams did a lot of things well in a nonleague win at The Arena.
Brandton Chatfield scored 19 points and Tru Allen, younger brother of Idaho guard Trevon Allen, added 17 for Clarkston. Allen’s driving ability also paid dividends, as Austin Roueche made three 3-pointers in the first half, Alex Italia one. The Bantams led 34-29 at the half.
“In the first half, we left a couple of their role guys open,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “They were able to break us down off the dribble, make us collapse and kick it out.”
McLean said the 6-foot-9 Chatfield “was a load” inside. Post Falls was unable to match his beef inside, especially after 6-5 Trojan senior Gavven Desjarlais banged knees with another player and saw his playing time limited.
“They played a zone, daring us to penetrate, and also to take away our perimeter shooting,” McLean said.
Alex Horning added 12 points for Post Falls (4-5), which travels to play King’s of Shoreline, Wash., on Thursday, part of three games in three days, which includes games Friday and Saturday at the Auburn Under Armour Holiday Classic in Auburn, Wash.

HARRISON FLATS — Kenyon SpottedHorse scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the first half, leading the Knights past the Warriors in the North Star League opener for both schools.
Gage Maitland scored 16 points, Triston Usdrowski 14 and Marcus Ausman 13 for Kootenai (4-1), which hosts Mullan on Jan. 8.
“Triston fouled out with 30 seconds left in the third quarter, and Marcus fouled out with five minutes left, so we got into some foul trouble and had to sit some guys,” Kootenai coach Mike Maitland said. “Lakeside is a pretty good team. They don’t miss many shots.”
Talon Twoteeth scored 15 points for Lakeside (4-3), which hosts Logos on Thursday.
“It was a grind out kind of game tonight,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “We kind of had to use our reserves tonight, so it was a test of our bench tonight, but I was happy with how they played.”
