Wallace snaps Genesis Prep's 31-game win streak in league

WALLACE — Zack Welch scored 22 points and the Wallace Miners handed the Genesis Prep Jaguars their first loss as a member of the North Star League, 57-50 on Thursday at Kirby Krulitz Court.

Wallace, ranked fifth in this week’s 1A Division media poll, improves to 6-0 on the season. It was the Miners’ league opener.

Kon Ajang and Scott Mwinuka scored 20 points each for Genesis Prep, the two-time defending state 1A Division II champions, and ranked No. 1 in this week’s poll. The Jaguars had won 31 straight North Star League games since joining the league in the 2015-16 season.

Genesis Prep star guard Jonny Hillman, who signed with NAIA Carroll College in November, sat out the game due to an ankle injury.

Genesis Prep (1-2, 1-1 NSL) will face Rogers on Saturday at Post Falls Middle School.

Wallace travels to Priest River on Saturday.

MULLAN — Trailing by 17 points at halftime, the host Tigers outscored the Superior/Alberton co-op 37-8 in the second half — 27-3 in the third quarter — in a wild comeback at the Mullan Pavilion.

“We got after them defensively, and we started playing really good basketball at both ends of the court,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said of the second half.

That after two of the five Tigers players to suit up — Chandler Holling and Wyatt King, who just became eligible — picked up their fourth fouls early in the third quarter. But neither was whistled for a fifth.

Riley Trogden scored 22 of his game-high 24 points in the second half for Mullan (3-3), including 14 in the third quarter. Luke Trogden added 15 points.

“This was just a great, great group effort,” Elston said, praising Holling in particular for his performance.

Aaron Waddell had 14 of his 19 points in the first half for Clark Fork.

Mullan travels to Clark Fork — the one in Idaho — on Tuesday for a North Star League play.

RATHDRUM — Katy Ryan had 17 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Hawks, who pulled away late to beat the Wildcats in a nonleague game at Hawk Court.

“Not much went right in the first half,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “The best thing we could do was foul, and we put ourselves in a bad situation. We had some kids that came off the bench, play well and kept us in it. The girls started to step up and make some plays in the second half.”

Taylor Elpers had 13 points, Mel Loutzenhiser 10 points and four assists and Lauryn Cooper three steals and two assists for Lakeland (4-4), which hosts Timberlake on Tuesday.

Jaron Figueroa scored 14 points for Kellogg (4-4), which travels to Shadle Park on Saturday.

WALLACE — Minus their top two players, Bella Murekatete (illness) and Rachel Schroeder (injury), the Jaguars fell to the Miners in North Star League play at Kirby Krulitz Court.

“Tough night shooting,” Genesis Prep coach Brandon Haas said. “Our girls played hard but when the ball doesn’t drop it makes the game tougher. We learned a lot without them in tonight, though.”

Jaden House scored a game-high 15 points for Wallace in its league opener.

Trinity Morrow led Genesis Prep (3-2, 1-1 NSL) with five points. Another Jaguar, Emily Martinez, played limited minutes due to shin splints.

On Saturday, Genesis Prep plays host to Rogers, and Wallace visits Priest River.
