WORKERS: Same ol' rhythm

| December 7, 2018 12:00 AM

It was interesting to learn that Circadian Rhythm and a CRYT gene somehow dictate how we perform at work. Thanks to Sholeh’s recent column, the folks in New York City have now enlightened us.

An old factory supervisor once explained it to me this way. “There are winders and there are unwinders. Winders stagger into work at the last minute, fumble around the time clock and punch in. They do little but gulp coffee until first break. But as the day goes on, their production increases and by quitting time they rush the time clock and run to the parking lot. Unwinders, on the other hand, bound into work, clock in, and turn out product like mad until mid-afternoon. By quitting time, they are done. They fumble around at the time clock, and plug the exit at shift change.”

This was told to me in the 1960s. It’s nice to know that the folks at Rockefeller University have finally caught up.
