Duran, Parson notch wins for Cards at

Cliff Keen tourney

LAS VEGAS — Izaiah Duran (165 pounds) and Bryce Parson (149) of NIC each had wins in the consolation round, but were later eliminated at the Cliff Keen Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

NIC was one of the few two-year schools at the tourney, which attracts many of the top wrestlers from NCAA and NAIA schools.

Parson, which lost in the opening round to Josh Heil of Campbell, beat Jake Thompson of Western Wyoming by a 16-0 technical fall.

“Bryce went right out and got after things,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “He had a tough loss off the bat, bounced back, and took the Western kid down. He got after it right away, dominated and got some great confidence.”

Parson was later eliminated by Malik Amine of Michigan by technical fall.

Duran pinned Anthony Petrone of Northwestern in 4 minutes, 4 seconds in a consolation match. Duran was later eliminated by major decision by Clarion’s Evan DeLong.

“The Northwestern match was a real good match for Izaiah,” Whitcomb said. “He’s a heck of a talent, and that should give him some confidence going forward.”

All NIC wrestlers were eliminated on the first day of the two-day tourney.

NIC travels to Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia, next Friday.
