COEUR d’ALENE — A suspect was shot and killed by a security officer during an attempted robbery in Coeur d'Alene early Saturday afternoon.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department reported that police responded to shots fired inside Global Credit Union at 320 E. Neider Ave. around 1 p.m.

On scene, officers learned a suspect wearing dark clothes and a full face shield motorcycle helmet entered the credit union brandishing a gun.

The armed security officer inside the bank recognized the threat and drew his gun and fired at the suspect, hitting him at least once. The suspect attempted to flee from the bank but succumbed to his injuries, collapsing inside the building.

Officers located him and provided lifesaving efforts, which were not successful and the suspect was pronounced dead.

Detectives from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department are working with agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a joint effort to process the scene, collect evidence and interview the witnesses.

No other injuries were reported and no customers were inside the credit union during the event.

The suspect has not been identified at this time and the investigation is still in the early stages.

Deputies from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from Idaho State Police also responded to assist.
