‘Betty’ Howell

In the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 2018, the bright light that was the life of Betty Howell dimmed, at the age of 97, and peacefully passed away. We say dimmed, not died, since she will remain in the minds and hearts of many family and friends forever.

Her love for fishing, hiking, mushroom hunting, huckleberry picking and the outdoors led her to Alaska for three months at a time for 11 years. She also cooked for a grandson’s science class on week-long trips to Yellowstone for 19 years, with 40 people or more. She had a successful huckleberry jam and jelly business in Idaho for 22 years. She was famous for her pies and cinnamon rolls which she sold at a café in Kellogg, Idaho.

Betty married Bud Howard in October of 1941, had three girls and two boys and suffered the loss of Bud in an accident in 1953, with a 3-week-old baby boy; leaving her managing their service station and garage at Rathdrum, Idaho.

Betty married Lawrence Howell in October of 1956 and moved to Florence, Mont.

In 1972 they moved to Cataldo, Idaho, where she spent the next 43 years.

She is survived by daughters, Karen (Rick) Armstrong of Eltopia, Wash., and Betty Lee (Tom) Wilkins of Missoula, Mont.; son, Pat (Edel) Howard of Hamilton, Mont.; brother, David (Frances) Roth of Kingston, Idaho; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Betty is preceded in death by husbands, Edger (Bud) Howard and Lawrence Howell; son, Jerry Howard; daughter, Florence (Curley) Kelley; three sisters and three brothers.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. on June 16, 2018, at the Coeur d’Alene Shrine Club, 1250 W. Lancaster, Hayden, Idaho. Please call Betty Lee Wilkins to RSVP at 406-880-9410.
