Lake City girls, Coeur d'Alene boys win soggy Lake City invitational

COEUR d’ALENE — The home course was kind to local golfers ... even if it was very soggy after a night of heavy rains.

Coeur d’Alene’s boys team and Lake City’s girls team earned victories at Monday’s Lake City Invitational meet at Coeur d’Alene Golf Club, with Viking junior Brayden Ogle earning medalist honors. Ogle and Lewiston’s Blake Ruddell each shot 75 in the windy and wet conditions, with Ogle winning via tiebreaker.

Austin Mitchell and Jackson Davenport were one shot back with a 76, helping Coeur d’Alene post a total score of 307 in the nine-team boys field.

“I’m proud of the boys ... when you’re dropping an 81 (from the team score) in conditions like this, that’s a strong day,” CHS coach Bryan Duncan said. “I think we’re getting used to these types of conditions; we’re getting webbed feet.”

With the district meet only three weeks away, Duncan is hoping for at least a few events with decent weather, perhaps starting with Thursday’s Coeur d’Alene Resort shootout, featuring golfers from Coeur d’Alene, Lake City, Post Falls and Lakeland high schools.

Cameron Johnson’s 76 helped the host T-Wolves claim second in the boys standings, followed by Kellogg. Cameron Flores shot a 77 to lead Post Falls to a fourth-place finish.

Dylan Knight fired a 79 to lead Lakeland (343) to a sixth-place finish.

- In the 11-team girls event, the host Timberwolves had three of their five golfers finish among the top four individuals to easily win the team title.

“Our girls played very solid golf today in really tough conditions,” Lake City girls golf coach Corey Owen said. “Our top three golfers — Sami Dement, Kyla Currie and Maggie Kennedy — played extremely well, finishing second, third and fourth overall. We keep improving every week and I am really proud of the progress we have made.”

Moscow’s Makena Rauch won medalist honors with a 76, followed by Dement (82), Currie (87) and Kennedy (92). Kellogg’s Kat Rauenhorst was fifth with a 94.

Post Falls girls were second with a 401, led by Renee Mosby’s 96. Sandpoint finished third as CC Deprez fired a 95, followed by Kellogg (411) and Lewiston (417).

Lakeland took sixth as a team, led by Madeline Neff’s 96.

Jessica Fahy led Coeur d’Alene with a 101 as the Vikings — with just enough girls to field a team — finished seventh.

St. Maries claims team trophy at Mullan event

PINEHURST — In an event that included boys and girls scrambles and best ball competition, St. Maries took home the traveling trophy in Monday’s 18-hole Mullan Invitational at Pinehurst Golf Course.

Tabitha Boller and Gabrielle Harold took first in the girls best ball event, helping the Lumberjacks compile 27 points in the team standings, which were scored similar to a track meet, Mullan golf coch Paul Elston said.

“This is the first year we’ve had the traveling trophy and this format. We’re trying to inject a little fun into high school golf at the 1A and 2A level,” Elston said. “It really seemed to work — we received a lot of positive feedback and everyone made it through all 18 holes despite sideways rain, hail and wind.”

To maximize participation, in some events golfers from different schools were paired on teams, or threesomes were allowed.

Other winners of their division included Lakeside’s Brooklyn Marchand and Samantha Bybee, who shot a 94 in the girls scramble. Genesis Prep’s Jacob Schultz and Jacob Schroeder took second with a 76 in boys best ball.
