CODE: Two to tango

As a former Realtor I cannot agree with Mr. Regan regarding the warning to Realtors re: building codes and inspections. You probably would find it hard to find a reputable Realtor to list a property that did not have permits, building inspections, etc.

The letter from Mr. Tanzer states many of the problems a potential buyer might have when considering a purchase of an un-permitted, un-inspected property, not the least of which would be finding a lender willing to lend on such a property. I don’t think Mr. Tanzer’s idea of a win-win situation is completely accurate. As with many laws/permits/inspections, there may need to be some updating but not just eliminating.

In a perfect world, every builder/home owner would be totally honest or prudent in their construction methods and/or materials. As for the customer always being right, there are two sides — seller and buyer!
