MERIDIAN — Lake City lost its first match of the season, but still has a chance to reach today’s championship match at the Boise tournament at Rocky Mountain High.

The Timberwolves (17-1) swept Borah 25-11, 25-22, 25-9 in Friday’s first match, then fell to Kuna 25-22, 25-22, 7-25. Because each game counts for teams’ pool play record, Lake City advanced to the top bracket for today’s action, facing Centennial High to begin the day.

“The first game, we did a good job of controlling the tempo, and our serving was good in both matches,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “Kuna is a good, scrappy team, but we made too many unforced errors at unfortunate times.

“It was good to see us rebound and play well in the third game (against Kuna), and we still have the opportunity to play for the championship.”

For the two Friday matches, Klaire Mitchell had 56 assists and 24 digs for Lake City. Arlaina Stephenson had 25 kills; Ashley Reyes had 41 digs; and Zion Nelson had 4 aces and 7 blocks.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sarah Hines and Marissa Hagerty scored for the host Panthers, who blanked the Hawks in nonleague play at Community United Methodist Field.

“Happy to survive this one,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “It was more about mental toughness than finesse of the game. You could tell that both teams were not firing on all cylinders. Lakeland, like us, has had a busier end-of-season schedule due to earlier issues with air quality. Some of our non-starters stepped up in a big way today. I had players who just couldn’t go anymore and had to get creative with some of the lineup. Marissa Hagerty came off the bench in the second half and found herself in the right spot at the right time and put the ball in the back of the net to give us a little breathing room. Very proud of the whole group for rising above the situation and finishing a long two weeks.”

Lakeland (3-8-1) plays host to Cheney today.

Coeur d’Alene Charter (8-0-1) is home vs. Kellogg on Monday.
