Gordon Albert Anspach Smith, 99, entered into rest on Sept. 19, 2017. He was born at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Wash. on May 23, 1918 to Henry A. and Bertha A. Smith.

A lifetime resident of Spokane, Gordon attended Grant Grade School and Lewis and Clark High School. He graduated from Washington State University in Electrical Engineering and remained a strong supporter of WSU throughout his lifetime. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Serving his country as a lieutenant, he equipped new naval vessels built in Bremerton with radar fire control systems as they sailed toward the Pacific theater. After his discharge from the Navy, he obtained his pilot’s license through the GI Bill.

In 1967 he married the love of his life, Darlene Smith. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in May, 2017. They enjoyed many years of vacationing in Cancun and spending winters in Palm Desert.

While working for his father, Hank, throughout his schooling, he eventually took over his father’s business at Electric Smith in Spokane. In his decades working with clients, employees and fellow contractors, Gordon was known in the industry as a fair man. While traveling throughout the world, he garnered respect for his integrity, business practices and talents. Gordon enjoyed the company of Presidents, Governors, business leaders and foreign dignitaries. Among his delights were his days as a pilot, visiting his many job sites.

Gordon was a Scottish Rite, 33rd Degree Mason in Spokane, and also a member of the Royal Order of Jesters Masonic Lodge in Palm Desert. He was a member of Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church. He was also a lifetime member of the Washington Athletic Club and served on their Board of Governors.

Gordon and Darlene were both passionate about boating in the San Juan Islands and flying to many different vacation destinations. Gordon was known to enjoy a good scotch or “two.”

Gordon is survived by his wife, Darlene, at their home in Spokane; two sons, Ronald (Sheryl) and Steven (Diane); three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eleanor.

His family will remember him as a kind caring soul who lived his life with a high level of energy, enthusiasm and adventure.

A special word of appreciation is expressed by the family members to Hospice of Spokane and to those of Senior Helpers, for their loving concern and care.
