Late goal leads Lake City girls past Sandpoint

COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City freshman Kali McKellips picked a good day — and a great time — to notch her first varsity goal.

McKellips found the back of the net in the game’s 78th minute, off a pass from Annica Wilson, to give the host Timberwolves a 2-1 nonconference win over Sandpoint on Monday afternoon.

The winning goal came shortly after Sandpoint’s Riley Walkington stunned the T-Wolves with a game-tying tally in the 73rd minute, coach Matt Ruchti said.

“We had the run of play for most of the game, but Sandpoint fought hard and got a goal when we were trying to close out the game,” Ruchti said. “To our girls’ credit, they responded, with Annica, one of our seniors, making a great play to set up Kali, who we just pulled up to the varsity team. It was a great moment.”

Payton Barber, off Bridget Rieken’s assist, put Lake City (3-1-3) ahead with a goal early in the second half.

“There were moments in the game where it was the best we’ve played all year,” said Bulldogs head coach Conor Baranski, whose team tied with the Timberwolve in the previous meeting. “They’re very organized, Matt’s a great coach and it’s always a fun game.”

The Timberwolves return to 5A Inland Empire League play on Thursday, traveling to Lewiston.

Coeur d’Alene 3, Moscow 1

COEUR d’ALENE — Two early goals set the tone for Coeur d’Alene, and a second-half tally by Geneva Bangtson helped the host Vikings earn a nonconference victory.

“It was a quick start — we crossed it in, they cleared it, we had a shot deflect off one of their defenders and then Megan (Drake) nailed a 20-yard shot just inside the far post,” CHS coach Andy Vredenburg said.

“Overall I was pleased with how the girls played,” he added. “We moved the ball around really well, defended well, and hit the crossbar a few times — we could have scored more.”

Drake added another first-half goal and assisted on Bangtson’s goal for the Vikings (6-3), who travel to 5A IEL foe Post Falls on Thursday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Goals from freshmen Sadie Anderson and Kayli Lynn helped stake the Tigers to an early lead, and the hosts rolled to an Intermountain League win over the Spartans.

“Priest River kept playing hard, kept challenging us both on offense and defense. It was much closer than the score indicated,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “It was a good match for us, and a good chance to get a lot of people involved.”

Georgina Simpson added two goals for the Tigers (5-2-1 overall, 5-1-1 IML), who will play under the lights at 7 tonight for Senior Night. Michael encouraged fans to bring canned goods for a food drive, with donations going to a local food bank.
