Defense attorney tells court Renfro shot Moore

| September 25, 2017 12:58 PM

The murder trial of Jonathan Renfro is under way today in First District Court.

In their opening statements, prosecuting attorney Dave Robins and defense attorney Linda Payne each said Renfro was the person who pulled the trigger of the gun that shot Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore in the early morning hours of May 5, 2015.

Both teams of lawyers said Renfro shot the 9mm handgun from inside his jacket packet, striking Moore in the face.

The defense is asserting, however, that it was not first-degree murder because Renfro did not intend to shoot and kill Moore. Renfro’s attorney also said that Moore’s defensive actions caused Renfro’s hand to tip up, making the bullet go into Moore’s head rather than into his body armor.

Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White, Renfro’s parole officer and a Kootenai County police dispatcher were among the witnesses to testify this morning.
