COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Vikings finally broke a scoreless tie with two goals in the last three minutes to beat the Lewiston Bengals 2-0 in a 5A Inland Empire League soccer match Tuesday which included a car crashing into the fence surrounding the field late in the first half.

Gabe Nazemi corraled a cross from Cameron Dance in a crowd and beat Lewiston keeper Matthew Hersh to the lower left-hand corner of the goal for the game’s first goal in the 77th minute for Coeur d’Alene (6-0, 2-0 5A IEL).

“We had a lot of opportunities to score, and were taking a lot of shots, and the Lewiston keeper was doing a fantastic job stopping them,” said Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Bruce Twitchell, who was subbing for head coach Jeff Lake, who missed the game due to illness.

With just over a minute left in the first half, a car just north of the roundabout on Fourth Street crashed into the fence, near the southeast corner of the field and near the Lewiston bench. Coaches from both teams rushed to the driver’s aid, and the driver was still being attended to by emergency personnel as the second half began.

“The kids were definitely thinking of something else,” Twitchell said of that portion of the game.

We’re starting to click on the field and it’s starting to happen little by little. We had to cancel three matches (due to smoke), and it’s been a struggle not being able to practice outside this season, but we saw tonight it’s starting to happen.”
