Sandpoint tops Lakeland in lightning-shortened match
SANDPOINT — Casey Shaha and Emi Lynch scored first half goals to lead Sandpoint to a 2-0 win over Lakeland in 4A Inland Empire League girls soccer on Monday night at War Memorial Field. The game was official, giving the Bulldogs (5-1-1, 2-0 4A IEL) an early leg up in the race to host districts, but was called at halftime after lightning strikes around the area.
Shaha netted her seventh goal of the season after pivoting at the top of the box, and firing a left-footed goal past the diving Lakeland keeper for an early 1-0 lead. Lynch then made a long run up the field and punched in an insurance goal in the 31st minute, as the Bulldogs created a lot of scoring chances off the strong attacking play of forward Riley Walkington.
Casey Shaha, Claire Shaha, Hadley Marshall, Rachel Meyer, Amy Edwards, Chloe Edwards and Kayla Nadeja were honored before the game on Senior night.
“Senior Night bring a lot of distractions, I’m pleased we got out of the first half winning. We deinitely wanted to play more,” said Bulldog head coach Conor Baranski, praising his leading scorer’s off-foot goal. “She’s been working on her left foot, and got a very good strike.”

Bridget Rieken scored off Annica Wilson’s assist in the 35th minute to knot the score just before intermission, but the T-Wolves couldn’t convert any of their other eight shots on goal.
“I thought the first half was a very evenly-matched contest,” Lake City coach Matt Richti said. “In the second half, I thought we had the run of play, but Lewis and Clark stayed really organized on the back line.
“We had some missed opportunities that hopefully we can convert in the future.”

RATHDRUM — Some missed early scoring chances — and the skill of the Bulldog soccer team — proved too much for the host Hawks to overcome in their first 4A Inland Empire League match of the season.
“We missed a penalty kick to go up 1-0 that could have boosted our confidence,” Lakeland coach Jeremiah Beckett said. “We were right in front of the net numerous times but just couldn’t covert.
“Sandpoint is a really balanced team, they’re fun to watch,” he added. “It was a real well-played game, we battled the whole 80 minutes, but they’re a strong team.”
