Sandra Key
Sandra Key passed away peacefully Aug. 19, 2017.
Sandie was born in Westfield, N.Y. Her father, Joseph Congdon who was a professional illustrator, tutored her in art. He was always her inspiration and her idol. She later studied art at Cal State University, Fresno, Calif.
She worked as an illustrator in her earlier years and then as a technical writer and illustrator while raising her three daughters as a single parent.
An affair of the heart brought her to Coeur d’Alene and a love affair with the Northwest kept her here.
Sandie was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, The Bishops Guild, The Coeur d’Alene Art Association and the Art Study Club of Coeur d’Alene, and a recent member of the American Botanical Society.
She was a wonderful artist and an inspirational teacher. She was an art instructor at Michaels for many years and also taught art privately as well. Painting brought her such joy and peace in her heart during difficult times.
Her illustrations and paintings can be found in private collections throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe.
Sandie was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Miller Congdon and her mother, Violet Mae Congdon (Allen).
She is survived by her three daughters, Jennifer Bryan of Fresno, Kathy Poltorak of Las Vegas, Nev., and Susanne Vasquez of Squaw Valley; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her beloved cat, Annie.
Her memorial service and internment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 501 E. Wallace Ave., Coeur d’Alene (Fifth Street and Wallace Avenue).
