CAROUSEL: What's ahead

| September 17, 2017 1:00 AM

We’d like to thank the members of our community who wrote letters to the editor regarding our historic Playland Pier Carousel. In only four months of operation, we’re excited that 17,000 people have been able to ride this beautiful attraction — many of whom have shared the memories of their youth. Maintaining its 95-year-old components and preserving its history are our top priority.

Our all volunteer foundation recognizes that the carousel has rekindled strong emotions and we see it on the faces of our riders. We continue to be indebted to the charity of John and Pat Foote and persistence of Richard LeFrancis, who brought the carousel back home. We thank Bud Ford and architect Ryan Johnson along with those who donated their time and treasures to allow our building to open after lengthy weather delays.

It’s been only four months, but we are already forward-thinking, including the installation of stained glass in the cupola, and a historic wall mural among other improvements. We’re also working on improving visibility through marketing and signage and are finalizing fundraising to lay a beautiful new floor this winter recognizing the members of our community who are extending the ride’s legacy by purchasing etched floor tiles.

With summer ending, we encourage you to stop by during the weekends through September, listen to the entrancing music and talk with our volunteers and employees about how we want the carousel to be a go-to destination. Visit www.cdacarousel.com for more information.
