Woman suspected of mail theft
COEUR d’ALENE — A woman who was carrying a pile of mail in her car when she was stopped Thursday morning by deputies while driving near Mica Peak was arrested for grand theft.
Kristina M. Geyer, 38, of Rathdrum, was charged with four counts of grand theft at her first appearance Friday in Coeur d’Alene’s First District Court. She is in the Kootenai County jail on a $17,000 bond.
Geyer was behind the wheel of a maroon, 2004 Chevrolet Impala on Signal Point Road south of Post Falls around 3 a.m. when deputies stopped the sedan because it matched the description of a car that was in the area two weeks earlier when a slew of mail thefts occurred, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office press release.
A mail carrier had reported a suspicious sedan on the 17000 block of W. Riverview Drive south of Post Falls Aug. 29 after finding several open mailboxes. The carrier reported an Impala was parked nearby, but it sped away suddenly.
Not long after the incident, property owners reported the theft of mail from their mailboxes, according to deputies.
When Geyer was stopped by deputies they said she was “driving on a suspended driver’s license and there was a large amount of mail in the car,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for the Impala and found “a mass amount of mail addressed to several different people,” in Kootenai and Spokane counties, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Geyer’s criminal history includes several theft charges and convictions.
She was sentenced to two years in prison for a 2011 grand theft conviction in Kootenai County, served 30 days in jail and was placed on probation for two years.
Grand theft carries a penalty of between one year and 20 years behind bars and a $10,000 fine.
A probable cause hearing for Geyer will be scheduled within 14 days if she remains in jail, and within 21 days if she posts bond.
