Kootenai finally gets to play, topples Mullan
- FOOTBALL
HARRISON FLATS — For Kootenai coach Doug Napierala, whose team had an early bye, followed by a nature-led one last week due to smoke, it was just like opening the season again.
Some two weeks later, it had the same result.
Andrew Whipple carried the ball 18 times for 134 yards as the Warriors beat the visiting Mullan Tigers 56-28 in a White Star League game on Friday night.
Gage Maitland had 86 yards on seven carries and threw for 257 yards and four touchdowns for Kootenai (2-0, 2-0 WSL), which travels to Lakeside next Friday.
“Unfortunately, it felt like the opener because we hadn’t played in so long,” said Napierala, whose team opened with a 56-40 win over Lewis County on Aug. 25. “We had a bucket of rust we had to knock off. We let them back into it and were able to get things going our way and captalized on their mistakes. Some good things happened on offense and defense, but it was just good to get out playing again.”
Triston Usdrowski had three catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns for Kootenai.
Mullan (0-2, 0-2) hosts Kendrick next Saturday.
“Give them credit, they didn’t quit and just kept fighting,” said Napierala of Mullan. “They got some things rolling and were able to capatalize on some things. Games with Mullan are always great games.”
