COEUR d’ALENE — The projected top two teams in the Intermountain League acted the part, even after having to practice indoors no less.
After Sandy Faulkner gave the Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy Panthers the lead in the first minute, Erica Vanderhoof tied the match for the Timberlake Tigers in the 78th minute, resulting in a 1-all IML draw at Community United Methodist Church Field.
“It’s tough to come off a week of no outdoor practice and then two weeks without a game, but we did start off strong,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We put ourselves in good scoring opportunities and moved the ball well, we just didn’t finish. Momentum shifted toward the end of the first half and we just couldn’t get it back for a sustained period of time after that. We were tired and frantic.”
Coeur d’Alene Charter (3-0-1, 3-0-1 IML) beat Timberlake (3-2-1, 3-1-1) 6-2 in their first match on Aug. 22 in Spirit Lake.
“Hats off to Timberlake for putting in such a strong fighting effort and not giving up,” Smith said. “They were very well coached and focused for today’s game. Ultimately, their determination led to their goal to tie things up at the end of the game.”
Karissa Willis had 11 saves for Timberlake, which hosts Priest River next Tuesday.
Mercedes Zepeda had four saves for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which visits Kellogg on Thursday.

POST FALLS — Breanna Torres and Annica Wilson scored as the visiting Timberwolves, playing for the first time since Aug. 26, beat the Trojans in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both teams.
“I’m really happy with how the our girls played,” Post Falls coach Steve Mills said. “Lake City is a really quality team and I believe that the girls really held with them very well. We had three really good opportunities to find the net and just couldn’t get it on frame. Lake City took advantage of two key errors and finished well.”
Lake City plays at Mead today at 4. Post Falls is home against Lakeland on Thursday.

ST. MARIES — For third-year Lumberjacks coach Brad Groce, it was the best he’s seen his team play.
Janna Oelke recorded a hat trick for the Lumberjacks in an Intermountain League win over the Spartans at City Park.
Priest River rallied from a 4-1 deficit to force a 4-4 draw on Aug. 29. This matchup was a lot different.
“It was the best, most complete game we’ve played over the last three years,” Groce said. “We connected passes, had solid runs. Overall, it was the best game I’ve seen our girls play. The last time, they came back from a 4-1 deficit. This time, we wanted to play how we practice and not have any letdowns. And I think we did a good job of that this time out.”
Jenna Holder had six saves for St. Maries (2-2-1, 2-2-1 IML), which travels to Grangeville on Saturday.

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Timberwolves outlasted the Trojans in a 5A Inland Empire League match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
“Both teams had their share of possession, but Lake City created more opportunities,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “We were more organized than when we played two weeks ago, and we played solid defense, keeping shots on goal to a minimum for Post Falls.”
Lake City (3-1, 1-1 5A IEL) hosts Sandpoint on Thursday.
Post Falls (2-2, 1-1) vists Lakeland on Thursday.

Tommy Krivancek had a goal and an assist for Lakeland (2-4), which plays host to Post Falls on Thursday.
“We had very good ball control ... everything was working for us,” Lakeland coach Jeremiah Beckett said. “Monday we lost 8-0 to Coeur d’Alene, and today we came out and looked like we knew what we were doing.”
Timberlake is scheduled to play host to Orofino on Thursday.
