CROSSROADS: Counting casualties

One February morning in 2015, we were on our way north on Pleasant View to a chili cook-off with our “award winning chili” in a huge pot secured in the back of our Dodge Magnum (Lil Blue). We were so excited about the event. Looking forward to the responses of our adoring public after tasting our scrumptious creation.

Then, as we approached Prairie, we noticed a car running the stop sign heading east. We had slowed prior to entering the intersection, as is our habit, and I believe that is what saved our lives! The impact was unavoidable and after the crashing, twirling, and whirling, a total of five vehicles were involved and affected by that one careless driver.

In hindsight, I have no idea if the guy would have stopped at that “deadly crossroads” had there been signals. I would like to think so. Our car was totaled (as was our chili, being thrown all over the back of Lil Blue) and our injuries were minor — at that time! However, two years later we are suffering. My wife is awaiting neck surgery for two bulging disks that are attributed to the wreck. I have periodic sciatica from standing on the brake pedal so hard! We’ve been through chiropractic and massage treatments, to no avail.

We agree with Mr. Reno that a roundabout would work at this intersection. I have no idea what the cost comparison would be to signal lights, but something — something — must be done.
