COUNTY: No czar wanted

| September 13, 2017 1:00 AM

I strongly oppose your endorsement (Editorial of Sunday, Sept. 10) of a professional administrator to run Kootenai County because this powerful bureaucrat would not be elected by the citizens and therefore not held accountable to them. They would have tremendous power to appoint department heads currently voted upon by the citizens and thus functioning as a czar. Your endorsement is based solely upon efficiency, but efficiency against the will of the people is totalitarian in nature. This is why this proposal was defeated in 2012 and should always be defeated. Freedom always triumphs over an efficient rule unaccountable to the electorate.
