Lake City wins Lakeland invite

RATHDRUM — Dropping just one set in six matches, the Lake City Timberwolves rolled to the championship of the 16-team Lakeland Invitational on Saturday.

Lake City beat Lewiston 25-17, 25-17 in the championship match.

Post Falls tied for third, and Coeur d’Alene tied for fifth with Lakeland, Sandpoint and St. Maries.

Moscow won the Silver Bracket, beating Cheney in the final.

In pool play, Lake City (9-0) beat St. Maries 25-12, 25-16, Bonners Ferry 25-13, 25-15 and Cheney 25-10, 25-19.

In Gold Bracket play, the Timberwolves beat Lakeland 25-17, 25-13 in the quarterfinals, beat Post Falls 25-19, 23-25, 15-6 in the semifinals and Lewiston in the finals.

Ashley Kaufman had 46 kills, 17 digs and 15 aces on the day for Lake City. Arlaina Stephenson had 28 kills, Klaire Mitchell 29 kills, 126 assists, five blocks and three aces, Zion Nelson 10 blocks, Ashley Reyes 25 digs, Chloe Kundson 22 digs and four aces, Reilley Chapman 15 digs and three aces.

“We just battled really hard all day long, and stayed focused on controlling our side of the net,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “We maintained our level of play for all six games, we played solid defense throughout the day, and we had phenomenal serving.”

Post Falls finished tied for third after its loss to Lake City in the semifinals.

The Trojans swept through pool play, beating Sandpoint, Reardan and Kellogg each 2-0.

In the Gold Bracket quarterfinals, Post Falls beat Coeur d’Alene 25-22, 25-17.

Allison Munday had 28 kills, five blocks and five aces for Post Falls (9-2). Macky Morris had 23 kills and 34 digs, Kayla Mayo 52 assists, Courtney Finney 30 assists and six aces, Sydney Parks nine blocks, Megan Wood and Tessa Sarff six blocks each.

“This was a great tournament for us,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “We were very disciplined and played with a purpose. Allie and Macky helped lead the way on our kill stat sheet, and Kalli Minden and Alli Carpenter also both helped solidify our back row defense. We have things to work on in order to get where we want to be before regionals but we are definitely making solid progress.”

Coeur d’Alene went 2-1 in pool play, beating Moscow 25-22, 25-23 and Priest River 25-10, 25-11, and losing to Walla Walla 25-23, 25-18. The Vikings then fell to Post Falls in the quarterfinals of the Gold Bracket.

Emily Kladar had 19 kills and 10 digs on the day for Coeur d’Alene (5-4). Delaney Schmidt and Kelly Horning each had 18 kills, Taylin Rowley 40 assits and six aces, Lauryn Phillips 23 assists and four aces, Sam Swayze 35 digs, Elly Schraeder six digs.

POST FALLS — Senior middle blocker Christa Imanzi totaled seven kills, three aces and four blocks as the host Jaguars beat the Tigers 25-15, 25-17, 25-10 in the North Star League opener at Post Falls Middle School.

“She was late (being eligible) for the season, and she’s really starting to get in the groove,” Genesis Prep coach Mindy Buck said.

Bella Murekatete had three kills, four aces and two blocks for Genesis Prep (3-2). Rachel Schroeder had three kills, three digs and three aces, Trinity Morrow five assists, Emily Martinez four assists.

Genesis Prep plays host to Wallace next Saturday.

• POSTPONEMENTS

The 5A Inland Empire League boys soccer match between Lewiston and host Post Falls, as well as a match between St. Maries at the Lakeland JV were postponed due to poor air quality. A nonleague girls soccer match between Timberlake at Colville was also postponed.

No makeup dates were immediately announced.

The 26-team Timberlake cross country Invitational at Farragut State Park was canceled due to poor air quality on Saturday.
