Looking for a bounce-back week
Week 2 was brutal for both of us on prep picks.
Jason Elliott and I both went 3-4.
On the first week college picks, Jason was 4-0, yours truly 3-1.
After two weeks, Jason is 10-4 on high school games, while I am 9-5.
Mead (0-1) at Coeur d’Alene (1-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
NELKE: Mead gave up 54 points to Post Falls, which has emerged as a not-too-shabby offensive unit. We already knew what Coeur d’Alene was capable of offensively.
Coeur d’Alene, 46-30
ELLIOTT: In last year’s matchup, Colson Yankoff was too much for the Panthers to handle on the turf at Joe Albi Stadium. Whether Yankoff plays this week or not ...
Coeur d’Alene, 48-20
Central Valley (0-1) at Lake City (0-2)
Friday, 7 p.m.
NELKE: The Bears, even after losing their starting quarterback, played pretty well against Coeur d’Alene last week. The Timberwolves managed just three points last week.
CV, 35-14
ELLIOTT: After a tough two weeks thus far, Lake City bounces back this week and gives the Bears a game.
CV, 28-20
Post Falls (2-0) at University (1-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
NELKE: It’s a role reversal this year — U-Hi is ground and pound, and Post Falls is more wide open. Like basketball, it could come down to which team can dictate tempo. The Trojans have scored 110 points in two games; might as well ride that bandwagon.
Post Falls, 36-32
ELLIOTT: There’s something special going on this year in the Black and Orange.
Post Falls, 35-20
Lakeland (0-2) at East Valley (1-0):
Friday, 7 p.m.
NELKE: East Valley is coming off a wild 58-57 victory over North Central. Lakeland has given up 82 points in two games.
East Valley, 49-21
ELLIOTT: Lakeland gets things going on the right track on Friday.
Lakeland, 35-28
Moscow (1-1) at Timberlake (0-2)
Friday, 7 p.m.
NELKE: There are some who think Moscow might be the best team in the 4A Inland Empire League. Timberlake, back to hosting this game after it was briefly moved to the Kibbie Dome, has allowed 93 points in its first two games.
Moscow, 36-18
ELLIOTT: Moscow had to rally to beat Grangeville to open the season a few weeks ago. The Tigers are still trying to find their form.
Moscow, 40-14
Deer Park (1-0) vs. St. Maries (1-1)
Friday, 8 p.m. at Kibbie Dome, Moscow
NELKE: The Lumberjacks look to rebound from their first loss since the 2015 season.
St. Maries, 24-18
ELLIOTT: The last two times the Lumberjacks have played in the Dome, they’ve been some fun games to watch. This one won’t be any different.
St. Maries, 28-20
Clark Fork (1-1, 1-0 White Star League) at Lakeside (0-1, 0-1 WSL)
Friday, 7 p.m.
NELKE: Lakeside lost 88-12 last week to Kendrick, but was without its four-year starter at quarterback. If he’s back, that could be enough for the Knights.
Lakeside, 36-32
ELLIOTT: An old fashioned North Star League showdown. Clark Fork’s defense was impressive in its opener.
Clark Fork, 38-30
Timberline (0-2, 0-1 White Star) at Kootenai (1-0, 1-0 WSL)
Friday, 7 p.m.
NELKE: Timberline has been outscored 100-20 in two losses. Kootenai is coming off the first of three byes on its schedule.
Kootenai, 50-12
ELLIOTT: The Warriors, with only nine on the roster, have had to rely on some real ironman football this year. With an extra week off ....
Kootenai, 56-18
COLLEGE
UNLV (0-1) at Idaho (1-0)
Saturday, 4 p.m.
NELKE: Idaho muddled through its season-opening win over a Big Sky team for the second straight year. Last year, the Vandals started to turn it on with an overtime win at UNLV. UNLV lost 43-40 last week at home to Howard, a 45-point underdog.
Idaho, 34-27
ELLIOTT: This one won’t go to overtime ... Beaten one week by Cam Newton’s brother, the next by Scott Linehan’s son.
Idaho, 38-17
Boise State (1-0) at Washington State (1-0)
Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
NELKE: Even if he struggled against Troy last week, there is no way a Rypien (BSU QB Brett) doesn’t get the start at Martin Stadium in Pullman, where his uncle Mark shined back in the 1980s. WSU is seeking a little payback from last year’s loss on the blue turf (lowercase) in Boise.
WSU, 38-35
ELLIOTT: Washington State won its opener for the first time under coach Mike Leach last weekend against Montana State. They’ll win their second game in 2017 under Leach this Saturday.
WSU, 38-28
North Dakota State (1-0) at Eastern Washington (0-1)
Saturday, 1 p.m.
NELKE: That EWU lost to a FBS school last week wasn’t surprising. Getting shellacked 56-10 was. North Dakota State beat Mississippi Valley State 72-7 last week, and is ranked No. 2 in FCS. Eastern took the Bison to overtime last year in Fargo before falling, 50-44.
North Dakota State, 45-38
ELLIOTT: Eastern Washington is better than that team that showed up in Lubbock last weekend. They’ll show that this weekend at home.
Eastern Washington, 41-38
