MLP: Where art thou?

Mrs. Language Person, aka Sholeh Patrick, writes a wonderful instructional column on the proper use of the English language. Some of Sholeh’s colleagues obviously aren’t reading her column.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to read the Coeur d’Alene Press. I call your attention to Brian Walker’s (Staff Writer) front-page article “Residents blast county tax hike plan” Sept. 1. On page A5 he states, “Ultimately, with most still people in attendance but their patience obviously waning…” I would then ask are these “still” people not moving or are they possibly dead?

In the same article, several paragraphs down he states, “Not including staff for the jail expansion, four new full-time positions county positions are planned.” A duplication of words throws this whole sentence off. Again two paragraphs down he states, “The county was able to avoid an employee insurance increase since it change consultants.” Three errors in one small article is unprofessional.

OK, it’s Sept. 2 and I’m having my morning coffee with a couple of doughnut holes and, of course, reading (or rather trying to read) the Coeur d’Alene Press. Page A3, Post-Harvey problems plague Texas: “It’s very unfortunate that right when he finally had hopes of being able to maybe go to Mexico soon to go see his family…” Another duplication of words? In another AP article, “California braces for severe heat wave,” third paragraph down it states, “Across the bay, Livermore will expected to reach 115 degrees…”

The next article is a blemish on an otherwise great article. Certainly a missed opportunity to praise one of our very own distinguished veterans. Page A7 “Gidlund receivs Quilt of Valor.” I’m sure I can see the disappointment on Carl’s face when he cuts this article out for framing and hangs it on his wall. Quite sad.

I believe a re-print of this particular article should be done in his honor.

With social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) and texting, maybe this has corrupted the paper?
