SANDPOINT — Klaire Mitchell finished with 31 assists, seven kills, seven digs, four aces and two blocks, leading the 5A Lake City Timberwolves to a 25-15, 25-23, 25-21 sweep of 4A Sandpoint in nonleague volleyball at Les Rogers Court on Tuesday.

Arlaina Stephenson had nine kills, Ashley Reyes eight digs, Ashley Kaufman four aces and Claire Heberer three blocks for the Timberwolves (2-0), who trailed the Bulldogs 18-10 in the second set before rallying for the win.

“We fought through the first-day-of-school type match, and were just off all night,” first-year Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “It was good to see resilience to battle back. Klaire was all over the place tonight.”

Grace Hicks led the Bulldogs (4-2) with nine kills, 12 assists and six digs, Marina Breuner 19 assists and two aces, Kaitlan Ward eight digs, Jenny Slaveck six kills and Shelby Kluver five kills and five digs in the loss.

The second-set meltdown carried over into the third, and the Bulldogs could never seem to find a rhythm. Sandpoint coach Erin Roos said errors in the serving and passing game proved costly.

“We were very tentative, hesitated, with poor communication. We were playing not to lose,” said Roos, who felt her team beat itself in the home opener. “There’s waves, and when the other team has momentum and you panic, it’s hard to recover.”

Lake City hosts Post Falls on Thursday.

Kenzie Dean had 6 kills and 13 digs for Timberlake (1-5) McKeeley Tonkin had 7 kills and 17 assists, and Kendall Lindley had 5 kills, 11 digs and two aces.

PLUMMER — After falling 25-7 in the third game, Lakeside coach Brad Veile admitted he was a little nervous how the rest of the Knights’ nonleague match against the Panthers might go.

Alyssa SiJohn had 42 assists as the host Knights rallied to win the final two games, beating the Panthers 16-25, 25-17, 7-25, 25-17, 15-13 in a nonleague match at Ron Miller Court.

Tenley Lambert had five kills and 21 digs and Kamryn Hendrickx four aces for Lakeside (2-4).

“Being a young team, they just decided to start playing together,” Veile said. “It was them motivating themselves. I was a little nervous, but told them to put that (third game) behind you. And we played a very good defensive game. Charter is a good team and keeps coming at you. We just kept getting the ball up and putting back at them.”

Megan Mackinney had nine aces and 11 kills, Rylee Peterson five aces, Maddie Kociela five kills and Chloe Turnbull five kills and three blocks for Coeur d’Alene Charter (2-1), which hosts Kootenai on Thursday at Holy Family Catholic School.

“It was just a game of errors,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Cynthia Beyer said. “Whoever made the least was going to win. It didn’t feel like we were on tonight, and we made a lot of unforced, unnecessary errors.”

Kootenai

HARRISON FLATS — The visiting Wampus Cats swept the Warriors 25-19, 25-21, 25-13 in Kootenai’s North Star League opener.

Brittney Larson had 21 assists and 17 digs for Kootenai, and Madison Napierala added 11 digs, three kills and three blocks.

“We have been doing a lot of experimenting with different rotations,” Kootenai coach Mary Gentry said. “We tried a new one during the second set that we’ve not ran yet. We have a few kinks to work out but I feel we put forth a decent effort tonight. We served great at 96 percent, we just need to tighten up our defense a bit so we can attack more consistently.”

Kootenai is scheduled to play a tri-match with Genesis Prep and the Kellogg junior varsity tonight in Kellogg.
