The filing deadline for people interested in running in the November election for fire district or municipal leadership roles is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8.

“Numerous fire districts have commissioner seats available and candidates can file now,” Kootenai County Clerk Jim Brannon said in a news release. “Most cities have council or mayor positions available.”

Candidates were able to begin filing paperwork Aug. 28.

Potential candidates must contact their fire districts or their city halls for residency requirements. Filing paperwork must be started and finalized at the fire district office or at city hall.

Fire district candidates must gather signatures of registered voters on their candidacy petitions. City candidates can pay a $40 fee in lieu of gathering signatures if they wish. The original Petition of Candidacy must be submitted to the County Elections Office to verify voter signatures.

“People interested in running for these offices need to take action by Sept. 8 to ensure their names appear on the Nov. 7 ballot,” Brannon said. “It’s best to begin early, since the filing process can be time-consuming.”

For more information, call the fire district or city hall whose phone numbers appear on your property tax notice, or phone Kootenai County Elections at 446-1030.
