David Garold Schlotthauer, 72

David Garold Schlotthauer passed away peacefully in his home in Blanchard on Aug. 31, 2017, from kidney failure.

Dave was born in Coeur d’Alene on March 24, 1945, to Garold and Dorothy Schlotthauer. Until the age of 6, Dave lived with his parents and siblings, Marilyn, Archie and Christy, in the old powder house at Fort Sherman, currently on the North Idaho College campus. From there, the family moved to Post Falls, where Dave grew up changing sprinklers for farmers on the prairie and playing basketball. At 6-foot-8, Dave had a hall of fame basketball career at Post Falls High School, and led the team to a state basketball championship. He went on to play basketball at the University of Idaho, where he still holds single season and career records for rebounding and personal fouls.

Dave held a master’s degree in education and became a teacher and head basketball coach, first in Noxon, Mont., and then at Post Falls for eight years. Dave was married to Shirley Ward during that time, and had two sons, Brent and Ross.

Dave married Robin Secaur in 1980, and had two children, Reid and Katie. During that time, Dave enjoyed living on the Spokane River and pursued a career in building custom homes in North Idaho. He found success in building homes for 30 years before he decided to work full time ranching and farming on his ranch in Blanchard, Idaho.

Farming became a passion for Dave, and he enjoyed raising cattle, as well as putting up countless tons of hay every year. In his free time, Dave enjoyed hunting, was an active member of the Blanchard Grange, and spending time with his wife, children and nine grandchildren.

A celebration of life open house will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, at the Blanchard Grange. English Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, gifts of donation may be sent to Blanchard Grange, P.O. Box 132, Blanchard, ID 83804.
