Shirley May Chaney, 94
Shirley May Chaney, 94, died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 2, 2017, at Schneidmiller Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Shirley was the only child born to Nat W. “Bill” and Lola V. (McCallum) Farrior on Sept. 22, 1922, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She grew up in Council Bluffs, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1940.
Shirley attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and she received a diploma from Van Sant School of Business in Omaha, Neb. On March 7, 1944, she married Duane H. Chaney in Walterboro, S.C., just before he left for World War II. They had 65 wonderful years together, had three beautiful children and lived in Council Bluffs until their retirement. Shirley’s first job was at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.
As a young mother, she continued her career at First Federal Savings and Loan, Association. When she retired after 27 years, she had worked there longer than any other employee. After retirement, Shirley and Duane lived in Sublette, Kan.; Buena Vista, Colo.; and they settled in Coeur d’Alene to live near family. They spent winters in Casa Grande, Ariz., and Moncks Corner, S.C.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Duane. She is survived by her children: son Douglas of Coeur d’Alene; daughter Linda and her husband Tim Bedal, also of Coeur d’Alene; and daughter Barbara Chaney and her husband Bill Wingen of LaCrosse, Wis. She is also survived by grandchildren Shari (Bruce) Trout of Hayden, Idaho, Paula (Ernie) Valdez of Longmont, Colo., Lisa (Chris) Hatcher of Council Bluffs, Joseph and Jarred Chaney of Omak, Wash. Also surviving are great-grandchildren: Jake Toews of Coeur d’Alene; Kate Toews of Clinton, Mo.; Colten Valdez of Longmont, Colo.; and Hayden, Wyatt and Shelby Hatcher of Council Bluffs.
A close family friend perfectly described Shirley: “She was the kindest person I ever met. She never had a mean bone in her body or an evil thought.” We love you Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, and your loving smile will be missed by us all.
Shirley’s family would like to thank the staff at Legends and Schneidmiller Hospice House for their attentive, loving and professional care.
