Donald W. Slaney, 82

Passion: Ivey Slaney, loving wife for 62 years

Dedicated to: Raising children

Hobby: Avid fisherman

Don was born in Southern California in 1935. His mother, Hazel, moved the family around parts of Montana, Idaho, Washington and California where Don acquired sisters Marilyn, Vicki, Flori, Michelle and brothers Cliff, Buddy and Dallas along the way. When Don was 18, the family moved to Southern California where he met the love of his life, Ivey.

They were married in 1955, lived in Nevada for a few months, then moved to Montana where their first three children were born: Bill in 1956, Steve in 1957 and Sallie in 1960. In 1961, they moved to Southern California where Matt was born in 1963. The family moved to Post Falls, Idaho, in 1969 and has been rooted there since.

He spent these times working various jobs in forestry, concrete, running his carpet cleaning business, and as a trucker, until 1986. By then the kids were grown and it was time to join the carnival! Don and Ivey traveled the west for 12 years with their computer portrait business and finally retired in 1998.

Don and Ivey, though working and earning a living the whole time, dedicated the bulk of their lives to helping raise their beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. From the time he was young, Don never knew a life that didn’t involve him dedicating himself to helping raise children.

When he could find a free minute, he would always throw a line in the water. Fishing was has favorite leisure activity. On a river, in a lake or in a pothole, if there was a potential for a fish, he would stop and check it out.

His family will remember him as a dedicated man who gave his life over to taking care of others.
