Doris Ruby Sheridan, 96

Doris Ruby Sheridan, 96, of Spirit Lake, Idaho, died Oct. 23, 2017, at Aspen Springs Assisted Living. Doris was born Dec. 18, 1920, in Alameda, Calif., to Rey and Almina Kelley. She grew up in Northern California and went to grade school in Sacramento and high school in Nevada City; she graduated in 1939.

Her dad was a cattle rancher so she grew up riding horses. During the Depression she made $1 a day working in the woods snaking poles on horseback; her sister Jean made $1 a day being the camp cook. She married Wesley John Fuge on June 13, 1942. During World War II, she worked for American Trust Company for two years and that began her banking career.

Her son, Michael Wesley Fuge, was born in 1944. He was 15 months old before his dad was able to see him after returning from World War II, where he was with the first wave of soldiers on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on D-Day. Doris and all the other wives held the fort down while awaiting the return of their men. Doris had her daughter, Kathleen Mary Fuge, in 1947 and was a stay-at-home mom. She was always involved in the school activities and enjoyed socializing with her friends, playing Canasta and Sunday family dinners.

In 1958, they moved to the Bay Area. Doris worked for Wells Fargo Bank and retired in 1983 with 25 years of service. Wesley Fuge died in 1963 and Doris remarried in 1970 to Neil Sheridan. Neil died in 1972.

When Doris retired in 1983, she moved to Spirit Lake, Idaho, to help her daughter and grandchildren. She enjoyed living in Spirit Lake and was very involved in community events. She was the treasurer of the Spirit Lake Senior Center, a member of the Grandmothers Club and belonged to Visions. She also belonged to the senior exercise club and enjoyed playing Pinochle anytime.

Doris was very adventuresome, whether it be by horse, vehicle or on foot. Even though she never did the actual Bloomsday Race, she went with her daughter for at least 10 years and probably did the seven and a half miles by walking around Spokane and exploring while waiting for Kathleen to finish. Then they would go out for a nice lunch.

She loved her grandchildren and would do anything for them. She has had road trips from California to Idaho with some of her five grandchildren; they were interest trips. She was a generous person who was always trying to help people in any way she could. Anyone who knew Doris knows how funny and feisty she could be. She always had fun on her road trips and adventures.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jean Shaughnessy. Doris is survived by her son, Michael Fuge, and daughter-in-law Glenda Fuge of Redwood City, Calif.; daughter Kathleen Balzer of Spirit Lake; grandchildren Eric Fuge of San Carlos, Calif., Aaron and Mark Sarpa of San Jose, Calif., Kelly Tomberlin of Lincoln, Calif., Scott Fuge of San Jose and Wesley Tomberlin of Spirit Lake; 10 great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew living in Oregon.

The family would like to thank the staff at Aspen Springs for the love and care their mother received and thank Auburn Crest Hospice for everything they did to help her.

There will be a private family graveside service Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, at Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake. A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at a later date for family and friends.

Yates Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements. Please visit Doris’ online memorial at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com and sign her guest book.
