Borah, Best and the food trucks
Back in the day, Borah Elementary was the best elementary school in Coeur d’Alene. That’s mostly because I went to Borah Elementary, and for Halloween we’d march in our costumes down to the nearby retirement facilities just off Best Avenue. And so all the people there thought it was the best school too. Elementary school pride is a beautiful thing.
Borah could still be the best elementary school in the area, but now my oldest daughter goes to a different elementary school, so that’s the best one.
The neighborhood surrounding Borah Elementary is mostly a collection of older homes — some in better shape than others but mostly a uniformly welcoming area.
Its centrality cannot be beat. The homes south of Best between 4th and 15th Streets are mere seconds from Interstate 90 access. Appleway is Fast Food Lane in Coeur d’Alene, and Third/Fourth Street offer a speedy jaunt to downtown Coeur d’Alene.
Don’t forget about the Best Avenue food trucks, featuring some of the tastiest eats in town — Taco Works, Rawdeadfish, Triple B Backhills BBQ, Best Sandwich Shack — it’s a tough choice every time. If I lived near there, I probably wouldn’t even bother buying groceries.
Back to the real estate. Michaela Corcoran-Hall, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Schneidmiller Realty, had a listing recently in the area — a five bedroom, three bathroom home built in 1964 with more than 2,500 square feet and a shop on the property to booth. The listing didn’t sit long.
“I believe it’s the central location, and it has easy freeway access, it’s easy to get to Spokane,” she said.
There aren’t many active listings in the area at the moment. Another home closer to Borah with five bedrooms and just over 2,000 square feet is listed at $229,900. Another home closer to 15th Street is also listed at $229,900 — it boasts five bedrooms too and sits on an oversized lot.
A couple of less expensive options are available if you travel just a little north of Best, near Sunset Park. For example, a four bedroom, two bathroom home built in 1971 and featuring more than 2,200 square feet is listed at $215,000.
Sunset Park, by the way, is a five-acre park located at 1355 East Best Ave. It includes playground equipment, a basketball court and two softball fields. I don’t remember it being there when I was a kid, but I was probably distracted by the nearby Videonics and Paws Sports Cards to remember anything that encouraged outdoor physical activity.
